Reviews
Idiosyncratic
- What did you like most?I chose to stay at The Beau due to its proximity to the Balboa Theater, where I saw a show, and it couldn't be better for that. It was very very clean and the staff was genuinely nice and welcoming. The room was a good size, very roomy. There is no chair in the room, but there is a cute sunroom on the second floor, which is quite comfortable for knitting -- comfy chairs, coffee and a selection of teas. This is also where you'll find the ice machine.
- Was there anything you didn't like?I didn't care for the mattress, too firm for my taste. The hotel knows that it's not soundproof and they provide earplugs, but hoo boy, you'd need actual noise-cancelling headphones to make a dent in the noise at about 2 a.m. This makes sense, of course, 2 a.m. is closing time for bars in California. But I just had the bad luck to be sleeping there on a night when there was a fight including grievous bodily harm, a standoff with police, and the perpetrator starting a fire in his room, so the drunken revelry also included lights and sirens and loud police announcements over a PA system, etc. The Gaslamp district is cute and funky if you turn left as you leave the hotel and walk a few blocks. If you turn right, as I did, you'll spend some time in Thunderdome, starting with the Hustler club next door to the hotel, but you'll be rewarded with Hey Books!, a terrific new/used bookstore with a fantastic selection.
I will probably choose a place with more amenities next time.
- What did you like most? The people were very pleasant and helpful when asked. The coffee bar was nice to have. Nice decor. Breakfast at the restaurant was delicious. Nice to have the $24 voucher.
- Was there anything you didn't like? The available stations on the basic cable channels was very limiting without a subscription. It was very frustrating trying to find the Superbowl game or any cable news shows. No refrigerator for any leftovers from eating out or softdrinks was frustrating.
